Buffalo, Ostrich & Deer…. OH MY !!!
October 14th, 2006So, today we go out to eat at dis place called Kiawe (say KAY-AH-VAY) Grill on King Street. Gwama n GrampaW took us there. To look at it, you may think to yourself “No Thank You, I’ll pass”. It a very, very small little place (I been in public restrooms bigger den dis - not to imply it is a public toilet or anything). It mostly is for take-out kine food, but they get like 3 tables or so for if you wanna eat there. We hear they are known for havin’ really GREAT burgers !! We readin’ down da menu — Hamburger, Teri Burger, Angus Burger, Kobe Burger….BUFFALO Burger, OSTRICH Burger, VENISON Burger !!! What the heck is dis ? We are in HAWAII ! We don’t get no Buffalos roamin’ around - well, except fo’ my brother Boomer, he look like one Buffalo !! (Hee hee - sorry Boomiez). I never notice no ostrich, or deer in da neighborhood either. Hmmmm….. Dis is vewy strange fo’ sure. Mommy isn’t brave enough to try, even tho’ they get RAVE reviews from all da Island Folk. She chicken out an order da Grilled SALMON! Grilled Salmon? What a WUS! Gettin’ Salmon at a place known fo’ burgers is like gettin’ a pizza pie at Wally’s Golden Wok of China - whatever dat means. Daddy, da brave man, go fo’ da Buffalo Burger. YEA Daddy! You are fearless! Unkle asked da waitress “How is da Ostrich?” She say “It taste like chicken.” Right…. That’s what they all say….. Unkle decide to twy it. YOU GO, Unkle!
So, da food comes, an everything look SO good ! Mommy’s salmon is big enough to feed a small country, or at least da state of Connecticut (which, by da way, is da third smallest state in da U.S. I picked dat one because that is where my Auntie Bettie Pasketti lives. Like you care.) So anyways, Daddy bite into da Buffalo burger an say it one of da best burgers he ever had. Him an Mommy once tried Elk Burger when dey stayed on a workin’ ranch in Montana, an that was da #1 BEST burger they ever had - actually, they said that in hopes of gettin’ a discount on their room during their stay, but it didn’t work. Unkle tried his Ostrich Burger, an he also say it very good an very “lean”. Whatever dat mean ??? Maybe that it didn’t have no feathers? Does it taste like Chicken, Unkle? It didn’t look like no chicken, it look like beef. Maybe they jus pullin’ our leg an really servin’ ground round. Nah — it musta been da real thing. Mommy say da salmon was really good too, an everythin’ gets GRILLED with kiawe (remember now KAY-AH-VAY) wood for a “ono-licious” (dat is hawaiian for “OH SO GOOD”) smokey flavor.
Mom never let me sample any at da table, even tho I promise I wouldn’t lick da plate or do a famous BRY BELCH, but after we left, she gave me a bit of her leftover salmon cuz I was such a good boy. Hey ? What about da OSTRICH n BUFFALO, mama ? I ain’t no wus, I like try dem TOO !! Oh well, maybe next time. So, if you ever in Hawaii an wanna try sumthin’ other than poi -n- lau lau, give Kiawe (let’s do it together: KAY-AH-VAY — vewy good !!) Grill a try. Da price is cheap too, I tell you, an da LARGE size soda could have doubled as a swimmin’ pool fo’ me, it was so big. HEY ! Speakin’ of swimmin’ — MOM - you suppose to take me skinny dippin’ again !!!
