Pine Martens.. Pikas… and Pups ! OH MY!!!!
So, as you know, Mom and Dad love to hike. They recently visited the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, and the wonderful peaks of Brighton, Utah this past month. (I may or may not blog about that adventure later. Depends what kind of mood I am in. I am a little mad that I did not get to go along, yet again, but I know I am not allowed to visit da mainland because of stinkin’ Hawaii Quarantine Laws, so I wasn’t AS mad as not gettin’ to go to Maui with them!).
While hiking, Mom and Dad came upon many cute little creatures they call Pikas. They are smaller than me, about 6-8 inches long, and weigh about 6 oz. or so. Although many people think they are a big funny-looking mouse, or maybe a hamster, they are actually the smallest member of da rabbit family. “What’s Up Doc?” Sorry, I couldn’t resist!
When mom and dad would stop to take a hiking break, they would usually find a little Pika scurrying around the trail between the boulders, collecting wildflowers, and carrying them off to their secret stash for winter munching. Pikas make a funny bird-like scream noise, and after mom and dad finally realized it was Pikas making that sound, not a bird, they would smile when they heard it. They say da Pikas reminded them of ME. They had funny personalities an was always on da go…go……go! They were glad da pikas was around to keep them company SINCE I WAS NOT!!!

Another cute little critter that mom and dad really like is da Pine Marten, which they also call me. It has very soft, shiny fur, and lives in da snowy forests.

When they came home from their great hiking adventure, they brought me back some little critters. I now have a pet Pika and a pet Pine Marten. We like to hang out on da warm bridge that overlooks da fish pond.
Nothing beats a nice sunny day with nothing to do but veg with your buddies.

They are great little guys and they like to go play out in da yard with me, although, I always have to keep a close eye on Mr. Pika, he likes to wander off and try to pick all Mommies flowers!
“Now you get back here and play with us, Mr. Pika, an stop eating all Mommies Flowers!”

Mr. Pika usually lives in higher elevations than Hawaii, more like 8,000 - 13,000 ft. So, sometimes he gets a little annoyed with da warm sea level altitude and goes in search of cooler spots.
I guess we had enough sun. Will make Mr. Pika happy (before he start to throw a screaming temper tantrum) an hang out in da nice cool shade da rest of da afternoon.
“Here, Pine Marten, buddy, I will take you to a cooler spot.”

“Hey Mr. Pika!! Where you stay? I think he over there in da cool shade, Let’s go over there.”
